{"id":750,"date":"2023-05-16T09:23:54","date_gmt":"2023-05-16T08:23:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.inspireslearning.com\/dahl\/?p=750"},"modified":"2023-05-16T09:49:49","modified_gmt":"2023-05-16T08:49:49","slug":"2023-summer-term-week-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.inspireslearning.com\/dahl\/weeklyreports\/2023-summer-term-week-3\/","title":{"rendered":"2023 Summer Term Week 3"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sessions on visualising data online, digital humanities theory, 3D art and sense of place in VR, and an update to WordPress adding the Zotpress plugin to link to Zotero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visualising Data Online<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The DAHL Shorts sessions this week were led by <a href=\"https:\/\/warwick.ac.uk\/fac\/arts\/schoolforcross-facultystudies\/liberalarts\/lapeople\/bryanbrazeau\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Dr Bryan Brazeau<\/a> of Liberal Arts. Bryan gave us a fast overview of a set of free web tools for DH by <a href=\"https:\/\/knightlab.northwestern.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Knight Lab<\/a> (Northwestern University). Visualising your data in different ways may inspire new perspectives on a topic, even a familiar topic that has been explored many times before. These tools are beautifully presented and simple to use, meaning that researchers, students and members of the public can approach data with a playful and experimental spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the second part we focussed on the StoryMap tool, adding information to maps. It is always a surprise to see people who have never used VR before able to go into the space and operate with quite complex controls and tools to create recognisable artworks. This shows just how effective the immersion is &#8211; it just seems natural. When people come out of VR they are able to describe the space as if it is real &#8211; it does seem real to them! When they go back into the same space, they report that it is immediately familiar, like a real space. As a philosopher of space, mind and aesthetics, I find this fascinating &#8211; not just for what it tells us about VR, but also as a way to explore <em>Dasein<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tilt Brush includes a wide range of painting, drawing, and sculpting tools. I&#8217;ve got the Zotero account up and running, and enabled the Zotpress plugin for WordPress (not perfect, but works for most things we need to do).
